IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR USERS & LANDOWNERS
Individuals and businesses licensed as Illinois Timber Buyers are not endorsed by the IDNR-Division of Forestry, nor is any agent or buyer’s ability or expertise in forestry or forest business practices. Any Illinois resident, non-resident or business can obtain a Timber Buyers License if they are insured, keep timber buying records, and submit certain reports pursuant to the law. This real-time web application of currently licensed or suspended Illinois timber buyers is a tool to list and/or verify valid licenses. This website is updated daily, or please contact the IDNR at 217-785-4984 to verify a license.
Forest landowners should be aware that individuals and companies listed fall within a wide range of forestry knowledge and expertise. The Timber Buyers license offers no performance guarantee, nor does it indicate qualifications of licensee. All Timber Buyers hold liability insurance with a minimum of $500,000 of coverage. The IDNR encourages landowners to seek references of a buyer’s performance from other lands and owners, entertain multiple offers from buyers, and use a signed contract agreement clearly listing each party, the designated timber, the dollar amounts, and the responsibilities affecting both parties. Regardless of any advice or cautions; timberland owners and licensed Illinois Timber Buyers are free to agree to any terms for the sale of private Illinois timber.
IDNR advocates for responsible forest management to yield multiple-uses and benefits including timber production, wildlife habitat, native plants, recreation, hunting, aesthetics, clean water resources, and much more. An important connection to managed forests and timber for landowners/foresters is the loggers, timber buyers, and mills that create our markets. Wood remains the best environmental choice for green building materials, heat and energy. Timber adds value to forest ownership that help keep forests as forests.
Landowners are also advised that public-service DNR foresters and independent, private consulting foresters are available to guide forest landowners in forest, timber and wildlife management - including making harvest decisions.
